Seamless handoff of GSM/VoIP interoperability over WLAN and cellular networks now
includes benefits of open source client devices
TORONTO, August 21, 2007 – Advanced carrier and enterprise services based on NewStep Network's leading solution for fixed-mobile convergence (FMC) can now provide customers with a fully-VCC (Voice Call Continuity) compliant handset running on a Linux open source operating system from E28 Ltd.
The two companies announced today that NewStep's Converged Services Node (CSN) platform was tested with E28's E2831 dual-mode GSM smart phone. Successful interoperability testing of E28 handsets and NewStep CSN confirms that service providers can effectively deploy FMC applications with a wide variety of client devices, including those based on cost-effective open source technology.
“NewStep is continually looking to increase the flexibility of the CSN platform. Our work with E28 now gives customers the choice of deploying flexible open source VCC clients, in addition to the numerous other dual-mode client handsets that we have tested for interoperability with our FMC solution,” said Craig Gosselin, NewStep's chief marketing officer.
The E2831 mobile converged smart phone runs on the Linux open source operating system with a touch-screen based user friendly MMI developed using E28 Graphical User Interface, and is fully integrated with standard IEEE 802.11b/g and GSM Quadband. The "candy bar" style ultra-thin handset device also offers multimedia, productivity and data streaming features such as IPTV, MP3, Video recording and playback, handwriting recognition and Personal Information Management (PIM) , integrated with WLAN VoIP & VCC for a seamless communication experience.
